Calatayud strengthens its international standing in women’s golf with a new edition of the Iberdrola Calatayud Ladies Open

The Iberdrola Calatayud Ladies Open, part of the LET Access Series (LETAS), was officially presented at a press conference bringing together institutional and sporting representatives to highlight the importance of a competition celebrating its fifth edition at Gambito Golf Club Calatayud.

The event was attended by Cristina García, Director General of Sport for the Government of Aragon; María Nogueras, Director General of Tourism for Aragon; Manuel Aranda, Mayor of Calatayud; Chema Dehesa, President of the Aragonese Golf Federation; and Jorge Piera, CEO of Galera Group and President of Gambito Golf.

The competition will feature 108 players from all five continents and has a lengthy waiting list, reflecting the championship’s growing international prestige and its established place on the women’s professional calendar.

Aragon backs golf as a driver of sport, tourism and the economy

In her address, Cristina García highlighted the championship’s track record and its ability to raise Aragon’s international profile. “I believe that today we are presenting an event that we can now say is firmly established in the autonomous community and has a very strong national and international reach”, she said, also emphasising sport’s role as a socioeconomic driver for the region.

For her part, María Nogueras noted that “talking about golf means talking about a strategic opportunity for Aragon”, highlighting the potential of sports tourism to attract high-value visitors and stimulate sectors such as accommodation, restaurants and tourism services. She also stressed the opportunity the tournament provides to showcase the gastronomy, culture and heritage of Calatayud and Aragon.

Along the same lines, the Mayor of Calatayud, Manuel Aranda, thanked Gambito Golf for its continued commitment to the city and highlighted the championship’s economic impact, particularly its contribution to hotel occupancy and tourism activity during a period with fewer visitors.

Chema Dehesa, President of the Aragonese Golf Federation, praised the development of Gambito Golf Club Calatayud, describing it as “one of the best courses in Spain”, and highlighted the dual legacy of competitions of this kind: encouraging sporting development and helping to promote tourism in the region.

Two players from Aragon and a growing commitment to women’s golf

Jorge Piera, CEO of Galera Group and President of Gambito Golf, highlighted the championship’s growth over its five editions, noting that the prize fund has risen from €35,000 to €50,000, reflecting the organisers’ commitment to the development of women’s professional golf.

Among the main developments, he announced the participation of two representatives from Aragon: Elisa Orduna, as a professional, and Iona García, as an amateur. Their presence provides an opportunity to showcase local talent in an international competition.

Piera also highlighted the excellent response to the tournament, with every place filled and strong interest in the Pro-Am, and thanked the public authorities, sponsors and partners, whose involvement is essential to ensuring the championship’s continuity.

He also encouraged fans to visit the course to support the players and enjoy a competition that represents an important step on their journey towards the elite of professional golf.

Gambito Golf reaffirms its commitment to sport and the region

With this fifth edition, Gambito Golf reaffirms its commitment to promoting women’s golf, organising international competitions and positioning Aragon as a leading destination for sports tourism.

The organisers are grateful for the backing of the Government of Aragon, Calatayud City Council, the Aragonese Golf Federation, Iberdrola and all the sponsors and partners who make the championship possible.

From 14 to 16 October, Gambito Golf Club Calatayud will once again become the centre of international women’s golf, strengthening an event that continues to grow and reinforce the connection between sport, tourism and the region.
